plain
PLAIN, [pl]aine. adj. Il signifie proprement, Qui est uni, plat, & sans inegalitez: & il reçoit divers sens selon les divers substantifs, ausquels il se joint. Ainsi on dit, qu'Une maison est en plain champ, en plaine campagne, pour dire, qu'Elle est au milieu de la campagne, en rase campagne: Et on appelle, Chambres de plain pied, Des chambres qui sont dans le mesme estage, & de mesme niveau. Les deux appartements se communiquent, & l'on va de l'un à l'autre de plain pied.
On dit aussi, qu'Il y a beaucoup de plain pied dans une maison, pour dire, qu'Il y a beaucoup d'appartements de plain pied.
On appelle, Estoffe plaine, Une estoffe unie, & où il n'y a nulles figures, nulles façons. Velours plain. satin plain. Et on appelle, Linge plain, Le linge uni, a la difference du linge ouvragé, du linge damasse dont on se sert pour la table.
On appelle, Plain chant, Le chant ordinaire de l'Eglise. Chanter le plain chant. la musique est plus difficile à chanter que le plain chant.
